The Long View — A New Paper Sculpture Inspired by Africa’s Most Iconic Silhouette

There is a moment — if you’ve ever watched a giraffe — where time seems to slow down.

She doesn’t rush. She doesn’t startle easily. She simply looks — across the savanna, beyond the acacia trees, over the heads of everything else — with a calm that feels almost ancient. As if she has always known something the rest of us are still figuring out.

That moment is what became The Long View.

“The Long View” is an original hand-sculpted paper artwork — a giraffe portrait set against a layered African savanna landscape, built entirely from hand-cut and shaped paper. Every element you see — the fur, the spots along her neck, the rolling terracotta hills behind her, the lush foliage at her feet, the soft clouds drifting across a warm blue sky — is paper that is painted in watercolor and gouache.

It is a miniature paper sculpture, which means the scale is intimate. You have to come close. And when you do, the detail and texture is revealed.

I’ve always been drawn to animals that carry a quiet dignity. There’s this extraordinary, unhurried presence that somehow manages to be both the tallest thing on the horizon and completely at peace with that fact.

In a world that rewards noise and speed, I find that profoundly moving.

The Long View is my meditation on perspective. On what it means to rise above the immediate moment and see things as they actually are — wide, layered, and full of subtle beauty if you’re willing to slow down long enough to notice.

I think that’s also what the best art does for a home or a collection. It asks you to pause. It rewards your attention. It means something different on a Tuesday morning than it did when you first brought it home — and that meaning deepens over time.

 For the Collector…

The Long View is a single, one-of-a-kind original. made once, by hand, in my studio — and it will never exist in quite this way again.

My work lives in private collections across the country, in homes and offices where the owners want more than decoration. They want craft with a story. Work that holds its presence in a room. Art that guests lean toward rather than past.

If you are building a collection with intention — or if you have been looking for that one piece that is genuinely unlike anything else you own — I’d love to talk with you about The Long View.

See It in Person

The Long View is currently on display at the Snow Goose Gallery Miniature Show in Bethlehem, PA, through June 13, 2026.

There is something about seeing miniature work in person that photographs simply cannot replicate. The depth of the layers, the texture of the paper, the way the light moves across the surface — it has to be experienced up close.

I warmly invite collectors, interior designers, and art lovers to visit the gallery in person or online before the show closes.

Snow Goose Gallery - view through June 13, 2026
